Through the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management program, you’ll prepare to be a manager, leader or entrepreneur in the hospitality industry. In this program, two-thirds of your classes will be on management topics as viewed through the lens of hospitality. CAREER OUTLOOK
When you think of careers in hospitality and tourism, you probably think of careers in hotels, restaurants and cruises. However, the tourism and hospitality industry is much larger than that. It includes categories such as health and wellness, weddings, meetings, and events, sports, aviation, destination marketing organizations, and more. Plus, each one of these areas needs professionals in finance, marketing and sales, security and banking. It’s no wonder, then, that professionals in hospitality and tourism management are in high demand.
Concentrations
The concentration in Hospitality & Tourism Management prepares students with advanced management and leadership knowledge and experience. These courses focus on skills that are important for those who are interested in starting their own business or advanced management positions within an organization. Examples of career interests may include event planners, entertainment, gaming and tour operators, food and beverage managers, and lodging professionals.
Students interested in pursuing a concentration in Sales and Marketing Management enhance their understanding of strategic marketing and how sales management plays an integrated function in the marketing process. Courses promote evaluation of guest needs, communicating with a variety of audiences and converting potential guests into lifelong customers. Examples of interest may include tourism and travel professionals, marketing managers and government tourism offices.
A concentration in Global Business Management readies students for careers working in the ever-increasing borderless world economy. Courses expand on risk management, international marketing, e-commerce, export-import procedures and finance on a global scale. Skills gained develop a further understanding of how to successfully conduct business on an international scale. Examples of career interests may include working for hotels, airlines or cruise ship companies.
THE CURRICULUM
As you study management in hospitality and tourism, you will take an array of courses that train you on the expectations and best practices of professionals and in the industry. Two-thirds of your courses will be in management, with a strong hospitality and tourism focus. Courses in communication, general business, sales and marketing are integrated into your curriculum to ensure you build a foundation not just for your first position, but for the life of your career.
