SC 107: Foundations of Functional Fitness, Nutrition and Wellness
In this course, you will learn about the history of allied and public health and community nutrition, fitness and health science careers. You’ll also explore the nine dimensions of wellness (physical, social, emotional, intellectual, environmental, occupational, spiritual, cultural and financial). Additionally, you'll receive foundational knowledge in basic biology, energy metabolism and chemistry concepts needed for assessments. By the end of this course, you’ll use SMART goal setting to support professional endeavors and understand how to select appropriate baseline assessments for nutrition, fitness and wellness programs. You’ll also learn basic approaches to changing health behavior using population-based analysis and intervention.
SC 290: Gut Microbes, Diet and Health
In this course, you will delve into the science of gut health and Nutrigenomics as a predictor of physical and mental well-being. You'll study nutritional interventions like using probiotics, prebiotics and superfoods and their effects on gut health, digestive disorders, and other diseases. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to explain the dynamic microbiome, bacteria/host relationship, identify factors and situations that affect gut health, explain how dietary practices affect disease outcomes, and conduct an analysis of published work regarding dietary interventions.
PY 320: The Psychology of Nourishment and Wellness
How individuals define and perceive the terms “wellness” and “nourishment” affects attitudes and outcomes of dietary and self-care practices. In this class, you will study sensory process disorders and eating disorder types, symptoms and treatments, how foods affect mental health, mindfulness practices, and elements of cognitive behavioral therapy. You'll also learn about human motivation as it relates to nourishment and wellness. Through this course, you’ll obtain an intermediate understanding of factors that affect health/wellness perceptions and how those factors influence lifestyle and dietary practices.
