Husson's Elementary Education - Teacher Certification program is designed for individuals who already possess an undergraduate degree, preparing them for alternative K-8 Pathways II Teaching Certification through the Maine Department of Education. It is uniquely intended for those individuals interested in changing careers.
Throughout the coursework and classroom experiences, competence is developed as students learn about and apply best instructional practices for all major academic areas, including reading/language arts, math, science, and social studies. This program incorporates both national standards and the Maine Learning Results. It also meets all requirements set forth by the Maine State Department of Education. Students completing the Teacher Certification program may choose to teach in elementary or middle level classrooms, in either the private or public sector. While beginning teacher salaries vary statewide and nationally, career opportunities should become more plentiful as an increased demand for educators is projected over the next decade.
This alternative program is comprised of a combination of methods courses and liberal arts requirements. A culminating seminar is taken in conjunction with a semester-long student teaching placement. While at Husson, Elementary Education Teacher Certification students have access to such amenities as wireless laptops, individualized assistance at the writing center, and an extensive library of children's literature.
Important Characteristics
Certified K-8 teachers must possess the knowledge, ability, and commitment to work effectively with young people. Many individuals in this alternative program have previous career experiences which have helped to develop skills that are beneficial to the teaching profession and they are eager to influence today's youth through education. Effective teachers pursue continuous professional development opportunities, embracing high performance standards for themselves and the students they teach. Strong literacy and interpersonal skills are also necessary to communicate well with children, parents, and colleagues.
