Southern Maine Campus of Husson University Offers New Course for Hospitality Industry Professionals

BANGOR, MAINE – December 18, 2013 – Husson University announced today that it would begin offering HA 301 - Supervision in Hospitality Management every Thursday from 11:00 am -12:15 pm at its Southern Maine campus beginning January 23, 2014. The course is ideal for food service, tourism, travel and hotel professionals interested in enhancing their current skills or gaining the knowledge necessary to move into a supervisory role at hospitality and tourism-oriented businesses.

Collins, Ed.D., executive director of Husson University’s Southern Maine campus.

HA 301 – Supervision in Hospitality Management provides students with an in-depth understanding of leaders’ roles and responsibilities at organizations in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Course participants develop a framework for supervision along with an increased understanding of the skills and tools needed to be an effective leader. 

The course offers case study analyses assigned in class combined with projects conducted at the student’s internship or job. Topics covered in class include career planning, communication skills, conflict management, managing change, labor controls, staff development, team building, and ethics. 

Supervision in Hospitality Management will feature live, classroom led instruction at Husson’s new Southern Maine facility along with interactive broadcasts from the university’s Bangor campus. Additional course content will be delivered online.

Dr. Belinda Wee, an assistant professor in the School of Business and Management at Husson University, teaches the course. Her Ph.D. is in Education with a specialization in Human Resource Development and her Master’s degree is in Human Resource and Industrial Relations. In addition to being a scholar with extensive theoretical knowledge, Dr. Wee has significant practical experience with world-class hospitality organizations that she brings to class every day.

Wee has held a variety of senior management positions in large international organizations, primarily as a human resource practitioner. During her tenure with Hyatt International Hotels, Vista International Hotels (Hong Kong) and Holiday Inn Worldwide (Asia Pacific), she applied and demonstrated leadership and management skills in the conceptualization, communication, oversight and execution of strategic plans. This included: 
• Designing training and development modules for implementation in hotels in China and Australia.
• Establishing a corporate university in Beijing, China
• Managing an international hotel’s human resource office in Asia, including the training and development needs of their properties in China, Hong Kong and Macau.
• Overseeing the business development of a major hotel management company, including various stages of marketing hotel management contracts in Asia.

Current students pursuing a degree through Husson University’s College of Business, including those enrolled in the institution’s Hospitality and Tourism program, may take this course in lieu of BA 311 Human Resource Management in order to fulfill their degree requirements.
