- Retired Deputy Undersecretary of Homeland Security to Participate in Husson University Terrorism Panel Discussion
Published on: April 7, 2015
BANGOR, MAINE - Three preeminent experts on terrorism, including the retired deputy undersecretary for Homeland Security, will be participating in a panel discussion as part of Husson University’s popular educational series, “Conversations at the Dyke Center” on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. at the Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business on the Bangor campus of Husson University. The presentation is free and open to Husson University faculty, students, members of local law enforcement and the public.
The panel will share their thoughts and perspectives on the history of terrorism, international trends, the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and the potential for terrorist acts in Northern New England.
“Many Americans are gravely concerned by growth of terrorist groups like ISIS and Al-Shabaab as well as the continuing activities of Al-Qaida and their affiliates,” said Husson University College of Business Dean Marie Hansen. “This presentation will help explain the reasons why individuals turn to terrorism and the types of actions being undertaken to help prevent the loss of life in our country and overseas.”
The format for “A Conversation at the Dyke Center” is similar to a town hall meeting. The experts chosen to participate in this series are leaders in their chosen career fields. The three individuals participating in this panel discussion are no exception.
Panel participants include:
• Chester (Chet) F. Lunner: Lunner is a retired member of the federal Senior Executive Services and a former national news correspondent who served in senior positions in Congress, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security. He was one of the key players who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Lunner retired in 2010 as the deputy undersecretary of Homeland Security in the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Intelligence and Analysis. In this position, he participated in a wide array of strategic policy discussions involving domestic counterterrorism issues.
• John Michaud: Michaud is the Director of the School of Legal Studies at Husson University. For 25 years, prior to joining Husson University, Michaud managed the Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s (NCIS) counterterrorism division where he trained and led special protective anti-terrorism squads. After retiring from the NCIS, Michaud worked with the International Olympic Committee and was in charge of managing corporate security during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. At the conclusion of the Games, he became a consultant to the Boston Police Academy.
• Michael Kamorski, Ed.D.: Kamorski is an assistant professor in the School of Legal Studies at Husson University. He has a master’s degree in strategic military studies from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Montana and a Doctorate in Higher Education from Nova Southeastern University. Kamorski is a retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, with 24 years of active duty service, including a combat tour in Afghanistan as the lead investigator for the 82nd Airborne Inspector General.
Prior to the “Conversation at the Dyke Center” presentation, students must complete background preparations leading up to the event and prepare pre- and post-visit papers. In addition, some students get the chance to “pick the brains” of the guest leaders over lunch.
