Husson University will kick off its Inauguration Week activities with a performance by Firefly the Hybrid, a multi-talented artist and dramatic performer who is a member of the Penobscot Indian Nation.
Jason Brown, who performs as Firefly, grew up on Panawamskek (Indian Island), a village in the Penobscot River in central Maine. A grandson of an elected tribal chief who successfully guided his nation in a major native rights struggle, Brown draws on his Wabanaki cultural heritage in his creative live performance
Brown, a traditional music keeper of the Wabanaki communities, has performed throughout Maine and the country. He was also the first Wabanaki person to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
As Firefly, Brown helps to situate indigenous people in a modern context as he shares traditional and futuristic songs as well as dazzling visuals. He also interacts with audiences, through call-and-response singing, sharing of traditional indigenous dances and also inviting them on stage to perform traditional instruments.
The performance will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4:30pm in the Furman Student Center and will be followed by s’mores on the Furman Terrace. All are welcome.
The Firefly performance kicks off a week of festivities to celebrate the inauguration of President Lynne Coy-Ogan at Husson University. Coy-Ogan will be officially installed as Husson’s seventh president and first female CEO on Friday, Oct. 18.
