Husson University hosted its First-Generation Student Reception in the Campus Center on Wednesday, Nov. 6, as a way of recognizing and celebrating students who are the first in the family to attend college.

The event featured a large gathering of both first-generation students and Husson staff wanting to show their support. Among those in attendance was President Lynne Coy-Ogan, who spoke about the importance of college education during remarks that were aimed at the students in the room.

“College is a big investment in yourself and in your future,” President Coy-Ogan said. “We at Husson will continue to be invested throughout your entire time with us to ensure you are reaching your educational goals.”

President Coy-Ogan also provided students with a few tips on how to have a successful college career, such as knowing when to ask for help, leaning into on-campus resources like tutoring services and academic advisors, and getting involved in clubs and organizations.

After her remarks, President Coy-Ogan opened up the floor to anyone wanting to share some words of wisdom to the first-generation students in attendance. Among those who stepped up to the microphone was Candace Chase, a success coach in the Center for Student Success and who previously attended Husson as a first-generation student. Chase reflected on her own college experience and the importance of getting involved in the campus community.

“I encourage you to get out there, join student clubs and organizations, go to events, and find your people because you do belong here and you do deserve to have a sense of community while you’re here,” Chase said.

Approximately 29 percent Husson’s student population is made up of first-generation students. The First Generation Student Reception is part of an initiative being spear-headed by the university’s Office of Student Success and Office of Student Life to be recognized as aFirst Generation Forward Institution by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
