The third Distinguished Business Speakers Series event of Husson’s 2024-2025 academic year was held on Feb. 12 in the Gracie Theatre, and focused on the importance of strong team building in the workplace.

The event featured guest speaker Mark Guastella, the vice president and general manager of Hollywood Casino Bangor. He spoke about his upbringing in South Africa, first jobs in the service industries there and in the UK, and his experience working in the US since 2003 in cities like Toledo, Chicago, and Las Vegas leading teams of various backgrounds and sizes.

“It doesn't really matter the size of the team,” said Guastella. “The way I look at it is you have to engage with your team, build trust and follow through.”

Guastella emphasized the importance of mentors in his life, both professionally and socially. Having people in your corner and maintaining those relationships is a core key to finding success.

“It doesn't matter where people are in their careers, what matters is that you're open to their feedback,” said Guastella. “Listen to what people are telling you. They’re taking their time to talk with you, and they bring a lot of their own expertise.”

That mindset can be applied to teams you led as well. Guastella focused on his interest in taking down barriers in workplace hierarchy, and the importance of allowing leaders to serve those they lead.

“Every single person is equally important to the team,” said Guastella.

The overarching theme of the discussion was one of fostering and supporting a healthy community, both in the workplace and among greater communities outside of it. This is best done through patience, understanding, and willingness to take and give constructive criticism.

“It's all about chasing opportunity and taking feedback on your goals,” said Guastella. “The common denominator in my business is working with everybody.”
