Senior Military Instructor

MSG Sean D. O'Brien, FA

Master Sergeant Sean D. O’Brien is the Senior Military Science Instructor for the University of Maine. He has served in this position since June 2015.  Before his arrival to the Black Bear Battalion, he served as a Firing Battery First Sergeant with the Second Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck, Germany. MSG O’Brien has held every leadership position from Team Leader through First Sergeant.

MSG O’Brien is from Allenstown, NH and he enlisted into the New Hampshire Army National Guard in January of 1999. He was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty of Cannon Crew Member (13B) and assigned to the 172nd Infantry BDE in Manchester, NH. He enlisted in the Regular Army (Active Duty) in August of 2000 and was assigned to 1st BN, 7th Field Artillery in Schweinfurt, Germany.  While assigned to 1-7 FA, he completed one deployment to Kosovo in 2002 and one combat deployment to Iraq in 2004. In 2005, he was assigned as a recruiter in Jacksonville, FL. Upon completion of recruiting duty, MSG O’Brien was assigned to the Second Cavalry regiment where he completed two combat tours to Afghanistan.

MSG O’Brien has completed Advanced Individual Training (Commandants List), Basic Leadership Course, Advanced Leadership Course (Distinguished Honor Graduate), Senior Leadership Course (Honor Graduate) and the US Army Europe Company Commander and First Sergeant Course. He has also completed the Army Recruiter Course, Supervisor Development Course, Action Officer Development Course, Airlift Load Planner Course, Unit Movement Officer Course and the Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course.

His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Army Senior Recruiter Badge (Gold), 3 Bronze Star Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Army Accommodation Medals, 9 Army Achievement Medals, 2 Valorous Unit Awards, Meritorious Unit Citation, and 5 Army Good Conduct Medals. He has also been awarded the Glenn E. Morrell medallion for recruiting excellence and is a member of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.

MSG O’Brien is currently working towards a Bachelor of Science In Business Management to complete his undergraduate program. He is married and has two children.
