Begin your journey towards a career in counseling with Husson University’s B.S. in Psychology, followed by an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. You’ll earn your Bachelor’s in Psychology and Master’s in Counseling in 6 – 7 years studying full-time as you build the foundation for a successful career.

By working with your advisor, you can tailor your Psychology degree to your own interests in a subfield of psychology, such as developmental or experimental psychology. You can choose courses to meet qualifications for the MHRT/C (Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community) certification in addition to earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. The MHRT/C is a state-granted credential required for many entry-level mental health positions in Maine.

Your graduate studies will combine preparation for certification and licensure with rich practice experiences for those seeking national certification and state licensure such as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Maine and/or Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC). (See requirements in other states for licensure as a mental health counselor). The MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP accredited and thereby meets national accreditation requirements.

You’ll follow a curriculum designed to give you a firm grounding in the skills and procedures of counseling as well as in courses in child and adolescent counseling, marriage and family counseling, addictions and crisis intervention. Plus, you’ll gain valuable experience before you graduate through a 100-hour practicum and 900-hour clinical internship.

About This Program

The Bridge program provides for early access to the graduate program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling for students accepted into the program. Students may begin taking graduate level courses during their 4th year, and may take up to 12 credits with the approval of their advisor.

Students must:

complete a minimum of 108 credits of coursework in the undergraduate psychology major with a 3.5, AND
maintain grades of no less than B in graduate-level coursework to progress to the remaining courses in the counseling program.

Upon completion, you will earn both a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (120 credits), in which 12 credits of graduate coursework will replace 12 credits of undergraduate electives, and a Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (63 credits).

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program as an undergraduate, students must:

meet the undergraduate admissions requirements for entry into the BS in Psychology program.

To be admitted to graduate coursework during senior year, students must:

have been admitted to the Bridge program
maintain a 3.5 grade point average, and
be recommended by the Bridge advisor(s).

To progress to the remaining courses in the graduate program, students must:

have been awarded their B.S. in Psychology degree
complete a minimum of 108 credits of coursework in the undergraduate psychology major with a 3.5, and
maintain grades of no less than B in graduate level coursework
