- Husson University Experiencing Strong Growth
Published on: December 19, 2017
Husson University continues to experience strong growth and next year is shaping up to be even stronger.
“An increasingly cost-conscious public is realizing that Husson University offers an outstanding education at an affordable price,” said Dr. Robert A. Clark, Ph.D., president of Husson University. “We make it our mission to help students get the education they need to achieve career success.”
According to the most recent data, Husson University’s enrollments have grown by over 18 percent over the past five years. In the fall of 2017, deposits from graduate and undergraduate students looking to reserve a space at the University increased by nearly four percent over the previous year. Looking forward to the fall of 2018, Husson University is already seeing a 20 percent increase in the number of student applications. (As of 12/1/17).
“Husson continues to be committed to serving the students of Maine. While our tuition for in-state and out-of-state students has always been the same affordable price, our focus has been, and continues to be, on serving Maine students from families who understand that education is the key to upward mobility. They seek and deserve the value Husson offers.” continued Clark.
In fact, 77 percent of Husson students are from Maine. The other 23 percent come from 37 different states and 38 foreign countries. Over 40 percent of Husson students are eligible for federal Pell Grants, an indicator of financial need.
Enrollment growth isn’t the only area where Husson University has experienced success. In 2017, Husson completed construction on three new townhouse buildings. These added an additional 72 beds to campus for juniors, seniors and graduate students interested in living independently while still having access to all of the amenities associated with campus life.
Husson sports teams also had a stellar season. Football, golf, and field hockey won their athletic conference championships with two of these teams winning the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in University history.
But perhaps some of the biggest achievements for Husson can be seen in what happens to students after they leave the university. In looking at the licensure passage rates for the most recent graduating class:
- 100 percent of the counseling students in Husson’s master’s degree program passed their National Counselor Examination (NCE).
- 100 percent of our education students passed their Praxis examinations. Praxis tests are taken by those entering the teaching profession. They’re part of the certification process required by states and professional licensing organizations.
- 98 percent of our Bachelor of Science in nursing students passed their licensure exams.
- 97 percent of our Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Science of Occupational Therapy students passed their exams to become practicing professionals.
The best testament to the value of a Husson education could be seen in the university’s Class of 2016 student survey. According to the survey, completed in 2017, 92 percent of Husson’s graduates were either employed or pursuing graduate education within one year of earning their degrees. This is substantially above the national average and reflects the national Brookings Institute finding that a Husson education adds significant value to its graduates as a return on investment.
The employability of Husson graduates can be attributed to the strength of the university’s academic programs and the faculty. “Our faculty members not only have a strong academic background, they also have experience working in the fields they teach,” said Dr. Lynne Coy-Ogan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Husson University. “Our students graduate with a comprehensive understanding of what they need to be successful in the workplace.”
“Due to the significant infusion of experiential learning in their curriculums, graduates with a Husson degree are work-ready on day one. That’s why there’s so much demand by area businesses for our graduates,” concluded Coy-Ogan.
