Tips for Parents

AUGUST

EagleWeek, a pre-semester program that provides extended orientation services for select students, runs from August 21-26. New and returning students will be moving back into residence halls August 27-28. Some students (select fall athletes for preseason activities and those in certain academic programs) can move in earlier; students will receive more information in July.

SEPTEMBER

The first month of school can be challenging as students have not yet developed a peer network. Research shows that students who do not go home during the first six weeks of the semester acclimate better. Encourage your student to get involved. Student Life holds a Club Fair early in September. Students can keep up with events on campus by following the Husson Instagram channel and the Student Activities Facebook page. Husson’s intranet, Eagle Connect, is another great source of information about what’s happening on campus. Homecoming is September 24-25; you can find the Homecoming schedule on our website.

OCTOBER

October activities include Fall Break on October 10-11. This is often the first trip back home since the beginning of the semester. Midterm is October 21 for semester-long courses. Students need to fill out the FAFSA each year they are enrolled to be eligible for financial aid. Complete the 2023-24 FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1, 2022. The University’s FAFSA priority deadline is April 15. Visit www.studentaid.gov to complete the form.

NOVEMBER

Students will be registering for spring semester courses and meeting with their advisor. Thanksgiving is the first extended break since the start of school. While this is a vacation, students are often completing coursework due when they return. Finals begin two weeks after students return to campus.

DECEMBER

Finals are approaching. After finals, semester grades will be accessible through the CAMS Student Portal. In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA) regulations, Husson cannot release grades, financial information, or conduct records to parents without a release signed by students. Husson provides FERPA waivers at Orientation or students can get one from the Registrar’s office. While most students are ready for a break and time to relax and renew bonds with high school friends, for some students, being home is so comfortable that the idea of returning to college can cause anxiety. Families can support their student’s transition back to college by helping them focus on long-term goals.

MARCH

Spring Break 2023 is March 6-10. Some students might want to take a trip during Spring Break, while others look for summer employment. The University offers several travel opportunities during Spring Break, including a community service trip in support of Habitat for Humanity and a Travel & Learn trip to Israel. When they return, students will register for classes for the next academic year.

APRIL

Students may get a little spring fever and struggle to buckle down with just four more weeks of classes remaining. During this period, arrangements for next year must be finalized. The University’s FAFSA priority deadline is April 15. Students will need to choose classes, housing and roommates for next year. On-campus residency contracts need to be submitted as residence halls fill up quickly. Husson requires all first- and second-year students to live on campus, unless they live at home within a commuting radius. Residence selection for 2023-2024 will be held in April; all returning first-year students must submit their housing agreements to the Office of Residence Life at that time.

MAY

Students will be busy wrapping up end-of-the-year projects and taking final exams. They’ll be packing up and saying goodbye to their new college friends. Immediately following Finals Week (May 2-5), summer session classes begin on May 8. Husson offers more than 100 courses during summer sessions, including many online offerings. This gives students additional opportunities to complete coursework toward their degree. Students move out of the residence halls after their last final exam.
